About

The Scholastic Shooting Trust (SST) is owned and controlled by the MidwayUSA Foundation, Inc., established by Larry and Brenda Potterfield in 2007. The Potterfields began the Foundation as a result of their passion and interest in education for shooting, hunting, firearms safety and outdoor skills. The MidwayUSA Foundation, Inc. has applied to the Internal Revenue Service to be a qualified charitable organization exempt from Federal and state income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. During the time the application for tax-exempt status is pending, MidwayUSA Foundation, Inc. cannot guarantee donations will be tax-deductible or that the application for tax-exempt status will be approved.

The SST is an endowment to provide financial support for collegiate and high school shooting programs. The SST , through its web site, gives alumni and other interested parties of universities, colleges and high schools the ability to financially support a school's competitive shooting program or financially assist in the start-up of a scholastic shooting program. Donations provide immediate grant potential for a school's shooting program(s) along with sustained funding from the investment earnings.

You may donate by credit card through the website or by sending a check to the Foundation's office. Donations of investment securities may be arranged by contacting the Foundation through email at information@scholasticshootingtrust.org. You may suggest a school to benefit from your donation or you may donate to the SST in general. All donations are unrestricted but the Board will attempt to honor a donor's suggested school.

A large portion of each donation will be reserved as principal that will be invested at the direction of the Board of Directors. The annual earnings from the invested principal will provide future funding for scholastic shooting programs. By donating to the SST you will truly be providing for the future of these programs through the endowment of the donation.

Each year the SST will grant money to scholastic shooting programs based on the donations received in the current year and the earnings from the endowed principal of past donations. In general, 5% of the donations received will be used to fund grants for shooting programs. The idea is to provide permanent financial support for scholastic shooting programs.

The SST will notify schools of a potential grant during the first week of June. School shooting programs may apply for grants by completing a grant application form and submitting it to the Foundation by July 15 of each year. The grant application form will be available under "Forms" on the SST website. School shooting programs may use grant proceeds to fund travel, uniforms, ammunition, entry fees, scholarships, range rental, etc.; however, grant funds may not be used to purchase guns. The applications are reviewed and decided upon by the Foundation and its Board of Directors. Grants will be paid to the shooting programs on or about August 15. The Foundation reserves the right to audit a shooting programs use of grant funds.

You can get started raising money for your school's program by printing the various fundraising documents available on the "Forms" link of this website. We suggest you encourage your friends, family and fellow shooters to donate.
